cell

cell is a site-specific sculptural installation composed of 111 hollow iron pyramids, glass works, and photographs, arranged to occupy the space. The number 111 references the “111 doors” in Michael Ende’s The Prison of Freedom. Each iron form—hand-welded from flat sheets—suggests a house, a cell, or skin. When touched, the forms emit metallic sounds; to remain silent, they must be kept apart. While the default installation emphasizes stillness and separation, in performance I intentionally collided the forms, activating them as instruments.

The work also extends into live collaboration. In a performance with a musician, she produced sound by striking the iron structures, while I moved the pyramids around the space, generating shifts in rhythm and resonance. Through this interplay, the installation explored the tension between proximity and distance, silence and resonance, structure and improvisation, transforming into a responsive circuit shaped by both bodies and environment.
