New City is a series that explores the relationship between body and material, and between consciousness and structure.
Beginning with the artist’s awareness of metal implanted in her own body, metal is treated as a mediator that subtly connects inside and outside, self and world.
In this work, structure does not appear merely as a physical framework. It emerges as a condition through which perception and consciousness arise. Slight deviations in gravity, support, balance, placement, light, and sound generate moments in which space becomes newly perceptible. Honda’s interest lies in these moments—when something “stands,” and when space itself comes into being.
The title New City is inspired by the etymology of Chiang Mai, Thailand, where the artist undertook a residency. Observing the rhythms, habits, and environmental tendencies of the city, she translates these impressions into spatial compositions using locally sourced metal, thin aluminum sheets, and small components.
The resulting structures resemble architectural models, yet remain partially inaccessible. By subtly shifting the viewer’s perspective away from a human-centered scale, the works function as generative sites—structures that continue to change in relation to time and environment.
