2023, Tokyo
This work is a sculpture created using the element of coincidence, as in play or fortune-telling.
The method is to draw a shape composed of 12 arcs on paper,
and then print the numbers 1 to 12 on the back of 12 cubes and 12 cylinders made from small pieces of iron,
and scatter them on the shape.
I created a sculpture based on the resulting shape, connecting the points where the numbers were paired with lines.
The small pieces of iron placed on the shape were like a map, and the resulting sculpture was like an island.
The word “island” refers to land surrounded by water, and it is also a utopia or imaginary paradise,
and in Japanese gardens, stones are used to represent islands, and I also remember drawing circles on the ground around me when I was a child and calling them islands.
An island has no substance, it is an abstract existence, and the word “island” is an abstract existence.
