The Island_02

This work was created as a continuation and disassembly of the 2023 installation The Island. Inspired by the structure of the human spine, small iron fragments are placed on top of a sponge—at once serving as a kind of support, and hinting at hollowness.

The small iron pieces weigh down the larger sponge, causing it to bend and sag. As viewers walk around the structure, which is installed low to the floor, their bodies and perspectives become entangled with its outline. This shifting of distance and viewpoint resonates with the experience of observing an island from afar, drawing closer, or tracing it through memory.

Existing as a “part” that suggests a whole while refusing to be fixed, the piece functions as a disorienting device—a structure that destabilizes the viewer’s sense of direction.
