The Island_02

The Island_02 was conceived from leftover fragments collected at the laser-cutting factory where I work. These repeated shapes—discarded as waste—took on the appearance of a spine when I placed them side by side. Though small in size, each fragment is solid and unexpectedly heavy. By arranging them on soft sponge, I sought to create a form that at once supports and presses down upon its base.

The structure evokes multiple associations: like a spine laid across a single bed, or like a massive object suddenly appearing in the middle of a desert. Its meaning shifts with scale and perspective. The work also emerged through a framework of chance and number: in the previous piece The Island (2023), “24” referred to units of time, while here it echoes the number of vertebrae in the human spine.
